PRONUNCIATION GUIDE
Many of the made-up names of the world of El’Darin are obvious how to pronounce at first glance, but equally as many are not. I hope to allow everyone a chance at knowing the names how I envisioned you saying and hearing them in your head as you read. The Audiobook frequently gets creative in its interpretations, and a revised file should be out soon so that the Audiobook will hopefully concur with the below.
The first list has first names of anyone mentioned, even tangentially, in Volume I, Omens of Dream and Shadow. The second list has other names, and it may include not-yet-named places but they are either on the map of Talvanis OR are equivalent items from the other continents – countries, capitals, etc.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- For the below Pronunciations, Syllable Stressing has these rules:
- The Primary stress falls on the syllable written in ALL CAPITALS.
- If a Secondary stress is required, it will have a Single Capital for that syllable.
- Lastly, an Unstressed syllable is in all lower case.
- Some letters have pairs of sounds to watch for:
- For the Letter A and sometimes Letter O:
- A W/w will be added if it is to sound like the a in fall or far (FAWL or FAWR) like the word fawn already does natively.
- Otherwise, if it is to sound like the a in cat, can, or pal, no W/w will be added.
- This “aw” trick may also be used for some “o” sounds, like cot — i.e., (CAWT) — since they rhyme.
- For the Letter C: K and S are used: K/k will mean a hard C like the one in candy, and S/s indicates a soft C (hard S) as in cinder.
- For the Letter G: G and J are used: G/g will mean a hard G like the one in goat, and a J/j indicates a soft G as in generous.
- For the Letter S: S and Z are used: S/s will mean a hard S like the one in snake and Z/z indicates a soft S as in rise.
- For the Letter A and sometimes Letter O:
- Adjustments may also be provided for letter combinations with more than one pronunciation, like TH:
- [TH/th] [bracketed] will mean a hard TH as in bath or think, and
- (TH/th) (parenthetical) indicates a soft TH as in bathe or there.
- The “uh” syllable pronunciation is generally indicating a schwa sound, overriding whatever vowel is present for the syllable.
- NOTE: The hard S and hard [TH] are almost always correct; very few use a soft ‘z’ version of the s or soft (th) version of the th.
As always, you may reach out to me via the Contact page if you notice any contradictions or inconsistencies or if you should have any questions regarding my world and writing.
Veladris keep you,
Jason Knightman
